Finale scores in minor keys: notes now open in the right octave (they used to come in an octave too low). The same goes for exporting to .musx.

Finale scores: in reduced systems the staves sit at Finale's distance, lyrics keep their own size and the title shrinks with the page.

Finale scores: brackets above the notes (such as those marking hemiolas) are imported and drawn, all at the same height within a system.

Page Format: measurements can also be entered in inches or points, and labels are no longer cut off in other languages.

Mouse audition: the speaker (the ear on Mac) appears only while you listen with Ctrl+Space (⌥Space on Mac), no longer as soon as you press Ctrl for a shortcut.

Windows: hovering over the buttons of the top bar and the tool palette shows their name and shortcut next to the icon, as in Finale.

Download Maestro

Delete with Filter, like Finale's "Clear Selected Items": Edit → Delete with Filter… (also from the right-click menu) removes only the checked items from the selected measures or notes, for example just the dynamics or just the chord symbols.

Paste with Filter is now also in the right-click menu, with None and All buttons and a choice for clefs (Always, Never, When the clef changes). Paste and Delete with Filter also cover measure items: key signatures, time signatures, barlines, repeats and jumps, system and page breaks, rehearsal marks and tempo marks such as "Allegro". Both windows now have two tidy columns.

Open a PDF: first and second endings, segno, coda, D.C./D.S./Fine, octave lines and trills, mordents and turns now come through. Separate parts printed one after another become a score with all the instruments, each with its own name, and the tempo, rehearsal marks and texts repeated in every part appear only once.

Jumps written as words no longer overlap: when two consecutive measures end with "Fine", "D.S. al Coda", "To Coda" or similar, the second widens just enough.

Windows: exported PDFs are cleaner, each page contains only its own texts.

Download Maestro

The measure menu restores the automatic width.

Finale .mus files: lyrics from files saved with Finale 2011 and 2012 now appear, along with page texts (headers, source notes, "edited by"), and the title and composer read as they do in Finale; the music leaves room for texts above the first system.

Staff group barlines: through the whole group, on each staff only (as in choirs) or between staves only (Mensurstrich), from the instruments window or the staff menu; also read and written in MusicXML and Finale .musx files.

Staff names can appear on the first system only, as in choral editions: Document → Layout → Abbreviated Names in Following Systems, or "Name in First System Only" for a single staff; without names the following systems start at the margin.

Windows: the installer now also speaks Japanese, and on Japanese Windows the document types have Japanese names.

Download Maestro

If a plug-in doesn't open, a message says so and the part plays with the sound bank.

MIDI output: a part can play in Vienna Ensemble Pro, in a DAW or on a MIDI port (IAC bus on the Mac, loopMIDI on Windows), with its channel, dynamics and articulations. In the mixer, Sound menu → MIDI Output.

Articulations… redesigned: on the left the list with ✓ on the ones in use, on the right the commands, with the keyswitch note read back as you type (also for libraries where middle C is C4), and a Listen button.

Document → Staves and Instruments → Score Instruments…: all the instruments in one window, like Finale’s Score Manager, on Mac and Windows. On the left the list with sound, transposition and brackets next to the names, reordered by dragging; on the right name, abbreviation, sound, transposition, clef, notation and staff size. Double-click to go to the instrument.

Several instruments selected together (⌘/⇧ on Mac, Ctrl/Shift on Windows) are moved, dragged, duplicated and deleted in one step, with shared size, clef and brackets.

Add Instrument, Change Instrument and Instrument Change use the New Score catalog, with search and families; in the inspector too.

Identical instruments are numbered automatically (Flute 1, Flute 2; duplicating Violin I gives a Violin II) and renumbered when one is deleted.

Piano, harp and organ: name and clef of each staff; add or remove a staff, and join two instruments into one (organ with pedals) or split them. Brackets and sub-brackets with a checkbox.

Notation for the whole instrument (rhythmic slashes, rhythmic notation, tablature), staff lines, and Hide in score for an instrument that is only needed in its part.

Before deleting instruments or staves that contain notes, Maestro asks for confirmation.

A tidier inspector: the section of what is selected opens by itself, the others close with a click on the title and show a summary when closed.

Lyrics: the window opens with the text already written so you can correct it, and double-clicking a syllable opens it there; in old Finale .mus files the hyphens between syllables are back.

Flows: several pieces in one document (the movements of a sonata, the numbers of a collection), each with its own title, measure numbering from 1, on a new system or a new page, and its own instruments. Document → Flows → Flows… gathers them in one window; Print and Export PDF can print a single flow; they come in from MuseScore, MusicXML and Finale and go back to Finale.

Edit → Move to Layer (⌃⌥1…4) moves the selected notes to another layer at the same spot; Move/Copy Layers… moves, copies or swaps layers in the chosen measures, as in Finale.

Document → Key Signature…, as in Finale: preview on the staff, major or minor, from one measure to another or to the end, with the notes transposed or kept at the same pitches.

The Notation and Document menus are shorter, with commands grouped in submenus, so they fit on small screens too; on the Mac the score keys (T, L, H…) appear next to the items.

P puts the courtesy accidental in parentheses, then without parentheses, then removes it.

Virtual drum kit: pads can be reordered by dragging, hidden and renamed for each instrument, and with Play Pads with the Keyboard the computer keys play and write them.

Windows: the colored icon also for files opened before with “Open with”. In Repeat Style… the labels use the Windows font.

Download Maestro
